Publications Analysis on Dynamic Capabilities between 1992 and 2012: Discussion on the Conceptual Evolution and Contributions of Greater Notoriety Authors in the Area

Resumo: Some elements of the dynamic capabilities approach appear in several publications (Schumpeter, 1942; Penrose, 1959, Nelson and Winter, 1982 Prahalad, Hamel, 1990), but since Teece, Pisano and Schuen (1997) this theme has been attracting increasing interest from scholars. The relevance of this issue has led researchers to consider dynamic capabilities as a robust new paradigm in the field of strategy, especially by proposing answers to the shortcomings of the RBV. The theoretical framework of dynamic capabilities has changed over time (Barreto, 2010) and has, in addition to convergence, branches among its supporters, especially regarding the theoretical foundations and sources used in their different conceptions. The concept of dynamic capabilities as a source of competitive advantage has made studies on this topic proliferate over the last few years, however this proliferation has not occurs homogeneously nor in a consensual manner which makes the deepening of the theme even more challenging. Thus, considering the major publications on dynamic capabilities between the years 1992 and 2012, this research presents contributions from leading authors interested to develop the dynamic capabilities approach and discusses its conceptual evolution. It is a bibliometric study with data processing using multidimensional scaling and network analysis. Qualitatively, the evolution of the approach is analyzed considering the different concepts and theoretical-empirical claims made by authors based of their notoriety. The results indicate (1) evolution in terms of conceptual, theoretical and empirical propositions; (2) an increase of citations of authors whom contributing to develop the theme; (3) diverse sources of publication with multidisciplinary approaches; and (4) multiple themes related to dynamic capabilities. Topics such as knowledge, skills, learning, value creation, manager´s capacity, strategic partnerships and alliances are associated with dynamic capabilities, which broaden the debates surrounding complex, absent or obscure points of the predecessor theories, reinforcing its main points as a way to expand the possibility of empirical evidence supplanting somehow, limitations of previous theories.

La relevancia de los temas ha llevado a los investigadores a considerar capacidades dinámicas como un nuevo y robusto paradigma en el campo de las estrategias, principalmente por proponer respuestas a las lagunas dejadas por la RBV. La estructura teórico de las capacidades dinámicas sufrió alteraciones a lo largo del tempo (BARRETO, 2010) y presenta, además de convergencias, ramificaciones entre sus defensores, con respecto a los fundamentos teóricos y las fuentes utilizadas en sus diferentes concepciones. El concepto de capacidad dinámica como fuente de ventaja competitiva hiso que estudios sobre este tema aumentara a lo largo de los últimos años. No optante este aumento ocurre de manera no homogénea y consensuada lo que hace que la profundización del tema sea un desafío aún mayor. De esta forma, considerando las principales publicaciones sobre el tema capacidades dinámicas entre los años 1992 y 2012, esta investigación presenta los aportes de los principales autores para el desarrollo del abordaje de las capacidades dinámicas y discute su evaluación conceptual. Se trata de un estudio bíbliometrico con tratamiento de los datos por medio de escala multidimensional y análisis de red. Cualitativamente, la evaluación del tratamiento es analizada considerando los diferentes conceptos y proposiciones teorica-empiricas presentadas por los autores de mayor notoriedad en las áreas, en diversos estudios sobre el tema. Los resultados indican (1) una evolución conceptual y de proposiciones teoricas-empiricas: (2) un aumento al citar autores que contribuyen al tema; (3) tener diversas fuentes de publicación y el enfoque multidisciplinario; y (4) tener multiplicidad temática relacionada a las capacidades dinâmicas. Temas como conocimientos, competencias, aprendizaje, creación de valores, capacidad de los gestores, asociación y alianzas estratégicas estan asociaciados con las capacidades dinâmicas y amplían los debates en torno de puntos complejos, ausentes u oscuros de las teorías antecesoras, reforzando sus puntos contribuyentes como una forma de ampliar la posibilidad de pruebas y comprobaciones empíricas suplantando, de ciertas forma, limitaciones de teorías anteriores.Alguns elementos constituintes da abordagem das capacidades dinâmicas aparecem em diversas publicações (SCHUMPETER, 1942; PENROSE, 1959, NELSON; WINTER, 1982, PRAHALAD; HAMEL, 1990), mas é a partir de Teece, Pisano e Schuen (1997) que o tema capacidades dinâmica tem despertado interesse crescente dos estudiosos. A relevância do tema tem levado pesquisadores a considerar capacidades dinâmicas como um novo e robusto paradigma no campo da estratégia, principalmente por propor respostas às lacunas deixadas pela RBV. O arcabouço teórico das capacidades dinâmicas sofreu alterações ao longo do tempo (BARRETO, 2010) e apresenta, além de convergências, ramificações entre seus defensores, principalmente no tocante ao embasamento e fontes teóricas utilizadas em suas diferentes concepções. O conceito de capacidade dinâmica como fonte de vantagem competitiva fez com que estudos sobre este tema se proliferassem ao longo dos últimos anos, contudo esta proliferação ocorre de maneira não homogênea e concensual o que torna o aprofundamento do tema um desafio ainda maior. Desta forma, considerando as principais publicações sobre o tema capacidades dinâmicas entre os anos de 1992 e 2012, esta investigação apresenta as contribuições dos principais autores para o desenvolvimento da abordagem das capacidades dinâmicas e discute sua evolução conceitual. Trata-se de um estudo bibliométrico com tratamento dos dados por meio de escala multidimensional e análise de rede. Qualitativamente, a evolução da abordagem é analisada considerando os diferentes conceitos e proposições teórico-empíricas apresentados por autores de maior notoriedade na área em diversos estudos sobre o tema. Os resultados indicam (1) uma evolução conceitual e de proposições teórico-empíricas; (2) um aumento de citações a autores contribuintes do tema; (3) haver diversidade de fontes de publicação e multidisciplinaridade da abordagem; e (4) haver multiplicidade temática relacionada às capacidades dinâmicas.
