Resumo: | This article is based on research whose aim was to investigate how a democratic management, understood as plural space for position sharing and conflit negotiation, has actually been carried our in public schools in Manacapuru, Amazonas State – Brazil. The text analyses educational Brazilian policy especially on democratic management of the elementary schools, taking into account how the principles of autonomy and participation in a democratic management have materialized day-to-day in school life. The issue s part of a much broader context which includes ongoing efforts toward democratization in the country. As a result of fighting for universalizing the right to public school and quality of teaching. Since then, democratic management is able to make immediate decisions into the conquest of the school and the society structures. It is worthy to note that, despite advancements made by the school system to effect a democratic management, there are still several challenges in overcoming centralized and authoritarian practices still existing in public management. |

It is worthy to note that, despite advancements made by the school system to effect a democratic management, there are still several challenges in overcoming centralized and authoritarian practices still existing in public management.Este artigo foi elaborado tendo como base uma pesquisa cujo propósito foi investigar em que medida a gestão democrática entendida como espaço plural de partilha de poder e negociação de conflitos, vem de fato se construindo na prática das escolas públicas do município de Manacapuru (AM). O texto faz uma análise sobre a política educacional brasileira, especificamente sobre a democratização da gestão em escolas municipais, tomando como referência os princípios de autonomia e participação da gestão democrática no cotidiano escolar. A questão se insere em um contexto muito mais amplo na medida em que se articula às lutas em prol da democratização do país. Como resultado de lutas pela democratização da educação no Brasil, a idéia de gestão democrática incorpora as duas fases iniciais desse movimento, ou seja, a luta pela universalização do direito à escola pública e a luta pelo ensino de qualidade. A gestão democrática, nesse sentido é capaz de agir decisivamente na conquista da transformação das estruturas da escola e da própria sociedade.
