This research is dedicated itself to the study of the processes of signification and visual communication, referring to the interpretation of photographic images, in which the human figure is an essential element. The Peirce’s Doctrine of Signs is the main theoretical basis for understanding the modes of functioning of these processes, as well as for understanding their consequences and implications. An inventory of visual studies, along with a broad development of the concept of visual culture, is added to the theoretical structure of the research as support of its foundation. The empirical section analyzes primarily, but not exclusively, of Modern Photography, focusing on the work of Richard Avedon and Irving Penn. Through this methodological course, the research intends to conceive new perspectives about the processes of signification and communication concerning to the human body and its implications for the cognition and interpretation of visual representations.
