Cartograpgy, territorial dynamics and material heritage: analysis from the baiano west in the XVII century

Resumo: This paper, from the empiric basis in the colonial space of the baiano West, analizes, based on the Historical Geography, in the space merely occupied and used by the colonizers during the XVIII century. Through out the XVIII century, the occupation of the region was disperse and there was only one village ”““São Francisco das Chagas do Rio Grande”. The well said “os sertões”, however, it was never a empty territory. In truth, they were occupied by groups who were hostiles to the Portuguese colony company, or simply unknown by that. The analysis carried out in different scales show the complex territorial dynamics that produced, during the historical time and different technical temporalities, the material and immaterial patrimony that represents nowadays the region beyond “São Francisco”.

A lo largo del siglo XVIII, la ocupación de la región era dispersa y había sólo una villa elevada ”“ “São Francisco das Chagas da Barra do Rio Grande”. Sin embargo, los llamados “sertões” no se referían a territorios vacíos. En verdad, eran ocupados por grupos hostiles a los intereses de la empresa colonial portuguesa, o simplemente endógenamente desconocidos por ésta. Los análisis realizados en distintas escalas muestran una compleja dinámica territorial que produjo, a lo largo del tiempo histórico y con diferentes temporalidades técnicas, el patrimonio material e inmaterial que “representa” actualmente a la región de “Além-São Francisco”.Este artigo, a partir da base empírica do espaço colonial do Oeste baiano, faz análises à luz da Geografia Histórica, num espaço parcamente ocupado e usado pelos colonizadores ao longo dos Setecentos. Por todo o século XVIII a ocupação da região era dispersa e havia apenas uma vila elevada ”“ São Francisco das Chagas da Barra do Rio Grande. Os ditos “sertões”, porém, em nada eram território vazio. Na verdade eram ocupados por grupos hostis aos interesses da empresa colonial portuguesa, ou simplesmente endogenamente desconhecidos por esta.
