Resumo: The research is oriented from the epistemological approach of cultural geography and aims to analyze the urbanization pattern followed by the Metropolitan Area of Toluca (ZMT), State of Mexico, Mexico, and its influence on the identity reconfiguration of the indigenous community of San Pablo Autopan. The Otomí ethnoregion has records of existence of more than five hundred years, witnessing the transformation of the Toluca Valley into one of the main cities of Mexico but also the changes in the way of inhabiting the original settlements. The analysis of the territorial expansion of the ZMT made it possible to identify that it has left behind a disjointed periphery in social, environmental, and urban terms, while the pre-existing settlements to the city are immersed in a process of urban-rural transition and segregation socio-spatial.
