Since the arrival of European colonizers in Brazil, indigenous peoples have been suffering injustices that culminated in genocide and dispossession of their lands. Even though the Federal Constitution of 1988 recognized the rights of indigenous peoples to live on their lands according to their culture, many had to flee their territory, mixing with the non-indigenous population, which resulted in the loss of their mother tongue and reinterpretation of ancestral customs. In addition, the same State that claims to protect these peoples is the same that signs megaprojects along with large capitalist enterprises on their lands. This text is the result of research carried out by an indigenous person from the Kanela do Araguaia people, in the state of Mato Grosso, on the historical process of retaking the territory.
