Análise dos níveis de endotelina-1 na saliva de pacientes portadores de carcinoma espinocelular bucal

Objectives: The present study aimed to verify if the salivary Endothelin-1 (ET-1) expression might represent an efficient biomarker to evaluate risk and prognosis from oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).Methods: For the present study, saliva obtained from 20 healthy patients, 15 patients with oral leukoplakia (histopathologic diagnosis of hyperceratosis or severe dysplasia), 14 patients that had OSCC and were free of disease for more than 5 years, and from 20 patients with OSCC were collected. The ET-1 levels were quantified by means of ELISA. Results: No statistical differences were observed in the salivary ET-1 levels among the studied groups, even when patients with age superior to 65 years or with arterial hypertension were removed from the sample analysis. Likewise, when the sample was divided by sex, no statistical significance was observed among the four groups included in the study. Conclusions: Taking into account the present results, salivary ET-1 expression was not found to represent an efficient biomarker of either OSCC or oral leukoplakia.
