Resumo: This study evaluated rapid maxillary expansion (RME) vertical and posteroanterior effects by means of cone- beam computed tomography (CBCT) in 33 patients, comparing tooth tissue–borne (Haas) and tooth-borne expanders (Hyrax). Haas group was composed of 18 subjects (13 girls and 5 boys; mean age, 10 ± 0. 11 years). Hyrax group consisted of 15 subjects (nine girls and six boys; mean age 10 ± 0. 11 years). All appliances were activated up to the full eight mm capacity of the expansion screw. The patients were subjected to a CBCT before (T1) and immediately after (T2) the active phase of expansion, the “growth factor” was not considered. The measures were evaluated by the analysis of variance of mixing model with repeated measures, where the age and sex were controlled by the statistical model. There was a forward movement of the maxilla in Haas group after RME, increasing SNA angle in 1 degree, while there wasn’t any change in the Hyrax group, there was a tendency of decrease the palatine plane and the oclusal plane to sella nasion (SN). Change in the angulation of the maxillary incisor was not significant, a tendency of uprighting was observed in both groups. Within the limits of this study, the results suggest that there weren’t significant changes in both groups in the sagittal plane immediately after rapid maxillary expansion.

O grupo Haas foi composto por 18 indivíduos (13 meninas e 5 meninos) e o grupo Hyrax, 15 indivíduos (9 meninas e 6 meninos), ambos com idade esquelética média de 10 anos e 11 meses. Todos os expansores foram ativados até uma abertura de 8 mm do parafuso. Os resultados foram obtidos pela análise de TCCB antes (T1) e imediatamente após (T2) à fase ativa de expansão rápida da maxila (ERM), desconsiderando o fator crescimento. As medidas foram submetidas à análise de variância de modelo misto com medidas repetidas, sendo, as variáveis idade e sexo, controladas pelo modelo estatístico. Houve um deslocamento anterior da maxila no grupo Haas após a ERM, com aumento do ângulo SNA em 1 grau em média, não ocorrendo alteração no grupo Hyrax, e uma tendência de diminuição do plano palatino e do plano oclusal em relação à base do crânio em ambos os grupos. Não foram observadas mudanças significativas na posição dos incisivos superiores, havendo uma tendência de verticalização dos mesmos. Dentro dos limites deste estudo, não foram observadas alterações significativas no plano sagital para ambos os aparelhos imediatamente após o procedimento de expansão rápida da maxila.Made available in DSpace on 2011-12-27T14:14:09Z (GMT).
