Resumo: | Introduction: Personality aspects and social activities engagement have been mentioned as factors that may contribute for the pathology development in the elderly, as well as influence in the attainment of good quality of life at old age. Objectives: The present study has given origin to two articles, each one with its own proposal. Article 1 had the general objective of investigating the relation between personality dimensions, quality of life and depression in elderly women of the University for the Third Age (UNITI/UFRGS), and the following specific objectives: to evaluate general personality dimensions, intensity and prevalence of depressive symptomatology and aspects of quality of life in the studied sample. Article 2 aimed at investigating the relation between the participation time at UNITI and the aspects of personality, depression and quality of life in elderly women of the University for the Third Age. Methodology: The two studies had transversal delineation, with a total participation of 103 elderly women, at ages from 60 to 86 with a minimum of seven school years. The data collection was performed at the University for the Third Age (UNITI/UFRGS), having being used the convenience sampling process. All the participants filled in a Free and Knowledgeable Will Form, and were then invited to answer about sociodemographic information, personality factors (PFI), quality of life (WHOQOL-bref) and depression (GDS).Results: Article 1 showed that the elderly women, in general, presented average characteristics to all the personality factors, having high deference and low aggression as the most referred dimensions. Through a clusters analysis for the PFI factors, it was observed the presence of two groups with distinct personality characteristics: one more preoccupied with the others and the other more self-concerned. Although both groups did not fill in criteria for depression, it happened a significant difference in the GDS score, where the group more preoccupied with the others presented higher depressive symptomatology. Article 2 suggested that the participation time over one year at UNITI is associated to a better perception of quality of life in physical and psychological domains and in social interactions, and to a lower intensity of depressive symptoms among the elderly participant women. Conclusions: The study indicates an association between personality dimensions, quality of life and depression in elderly women. Also, it was observed relation between the participation time at UNITI, perception of quality of life and intensity of depressive symptoms, that is, the more participation time, the better perception of quality of life in physical and psychological domains and in social interactions, and lower depression intensity. |

Made available in DSpace on 2013-08-07T18:56:54Z (GMT).
