This study analyzed the participation in technology-intensive sectors in the regions of Rio Grande do Sul. The main objective is to investigate the correlation between technological intensity and indicators of economic growth and development. For this, it was selected 25 sectors with relatively higher technology and the method used for the shift-share analysis of the participation of the same 35 microregions of the State in 2006 and 2011. For variable selection, as well as to carry out the literature review were used government databases, macroeconomic reports, found in major government sites, as well as the evaluation of the different expert opinions, published articles, books, and digital collections. The analysis revealed that, in recent years, technological development has been considered as a key vector of increasing business competitiveness. Consequently, most regions had growth in the share of high-technology sectors, mainly due to the differential component. This fact reveals the increasing competitiveness of these regions, probably as an effect of promoting technological development, which make the environment more conducive to rooting and internal dissemination of scientific knowledge. As the analysis of the indicators of economic growth and development and participation in technology intensive sectors, it was revealed a strong positive correlation. Thus, through the study it was observed that the share of technologically intensive sectors constitutes an important element in the development and regional economic growth.
