The objetive of the present study was to evaluate, through anthropometry, the nutritional status of children at a municipal school, in Cuiabá-MT, Brazil. Students in the first year of school characterized by low socio-economic levei, were the target group. This study included 81 children, from which 39 (48.1%) were boys and 42 (51.9%) were girls, with age ranging from 6 to 9 years old. The índices used were weight for height and height for age, which permitted to identify acute and chronic malnutrition. The Z-score criterion was used to classify the nutritional status, using as standard reference the NCHS (National Center for Health Statistics). Considering the types of malnutrition diagnosed, the chronic was more frequent (34.5%, 19.7% for girls and 14.8% for boys), while the acute malnutrition was found in 7.4% of the students (3.7% for girls and 3.7% for boys).
