Resumo: Five hundreds and seventy eight children, aged 6 to 30 months, were studied in arder to relate the nutritional diagnosis at the admition with the semester increments of weight and height. The children attended two different supplementary feeding programs wich offered also health care. The difference between the programs was related to the quantity of food; one supp/ied the total energy-protein needs where as the other covered only 1/3 of these needs. Two indicators were used in the initial diagnosis: weight for age and height for age, using as reference the NCHS standard. For the analysis of the semester increments of weight and height the Rache and Himes curves were used. lt was observed that in both programs the nutritional status at the admition was the same and that the proportion of children with the semester increments of weight and height above the 50th perce11tile was greater among the malnourished. The results of this study confirm the validity of the supplementary feeding on the recovery of severe malnutrition and suggests that these children should be seen as a priority in this kind of program. lt may also indicate that a greater quantity of food in the supplementary program that covered 1/3 of the daily needs does not have a major effect on the nutritional status of the children, nevertheless they representa contribution for the enhancing of the nutritional condition of the family.
