Resumo: The assessment of the impact of supplementary feeding in malnourished children was made through the evaluation of children aged 12 to 72 months, beneficiaries of the Nutrition and Health Program in São Paulo City-Brazil. These children were locate below the 10th percentile for weight and height (NCHS), at the admition in the program. For the weight evaluationn 604 children were analysed, 51.9% located below the P3 Twelve consecutive months after food supplementation, only 14.3% remained below P3; 52.8% stayed between P10 and P50 and 12.6% exceeded the median weight for age (P50). For the heigth evaluation, 594 children were studied: 53.5% below the P3, at the admition. One year after food supplementation, only 22% remained below P3; 47.8% located between P10 and P50 and 27% exceed P50. The malnourished children response to the supplementary feeding was positive. The authors agree that the Health Sector has the responsability on the diagnosis and therapeutics of the people in risk of malnutrition, and for the Nutritional Surveillance System, in the sense of warning the Public Administration of the urgency of a comprehensive and responsable Feeding and Nutritional Policy.
