DESCRIBING THE PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICE OFFERED BY A PSYCHOLOGICAL CENTER TO LEARNING DISABLED CHILDREN

Resumo: The aim of this study is to describe the Psychology Service offered to children with learning disabilities at a Medical School Hospital in the state of São Paulo. Twenty-five children (15 ma/e and 10 tema/e) with ages ranging from 7 to 12 (mean= 9.12; S.D.=1.69) participated in the study. The following data were collected from their medical records between 1996 and 1997: identification, family social aspects, reference source, complaints, diagnosis and treatment recommendations. The results showed that health professionals were the main reference sources (n= 14). The most frequent complaints were specific development disorders and lack of school abilities (n=22) followed by externalizing behavior disorders (n=19). The most frequent diagnosis were mental retardation (n=9) and learning disabilities (n=6). Parent training was the main treatment recommendation. A correspondence was found between main complaints and treatment recommendations. Parent training and multidisciplinary intervention are known as treatment recommendations although further researches are needed to assess the efficacy of such treatments.

Foram os sujeitos deste estudo 25 crianças (n= 15-sexo masculino; n= 10-sexo feminino) com idade variável entre 7 e 12 anos (IM=9, 12 anos; DP= 1,69).Os dados de identificação da criança e dos seus pais, a origem do encaminhamento, a queixa, o diagnóstico e a recomendação de tratamento foram extraídos dos prontuários das crianças encaminhadas de 1996 a 1997. Os resultados encontrados demonstraram que a maior parte da amostra foi encaminhada por profissionais da saúde (n=14). A queixa mais freqüente foi aquela relativa aos distúrbios específicos de desenvolvimento e às habilidades escolares (n=22); seguida por distúrbios de comportamento explícito (n=19). O diagnóstico mais freqüente foi retardo mental (n=9), seguido por distúrbio de aprendizagem (n=6). A recomendação de tratamento mais freqüente foi a orientação dos pais (n=21). Também encontrou-se uma correlação entre tipo de queixa e recomendação de tratamento.
