Resumo: The article presents a review of the literature dealing with non-parental care and its effect on the social-emotional development of children. Studies related to (a) attachment behavior and (b) social development of children who were and who were not cared for by individuaIs other than their natural parents have been reviewed. Attention is called to some aspects which may assist in understanding the effects of day care centers on Brazilian chidren.

São focalizados estudos que consideram (a) o comportamento de apego e (b) o desenvolvimento socioemocional de crianças cuidadas em casa ou fora de casa.
