Resumo: The purpose of the present study is to investigate the association between certain characteristics - Demographics and of schizophrenia. In order to examine the above mentioned proposal the relation between birth order, in different family sizes, and schizophrenia - 404 schizophrenic patients ( 201 males and 203 females ) fromfive psychiatric hospitals in the Greater São Paulo were observed. The sample induded patients whose age ranged from fifteen to seventy, their mean age being slightly above 35. The proportion of unmarried, legally separated and divorced people was significantly larger in this sample than in the general population of the State of São Paulo, for the year of 1980. Over half the patients came from families of 4 to 8 siblings, and the average number of children per mother in those familes was significantly higher, and,(6.60 ) in comparison with the average figure from the population, in general ( 4.65).

Estuda o grau de associação entre certas variáveis demográficas e a esquizofrenia. Para examinar o objetivo acima proposto, foram observados 404 pacientes esquizofrênicos (201 do sexo masculino e 203 do sexo feminino), que estavam internados em cinco hospitais psiquiátricos da área metropolitana de São Paulo. A amostra foi constituída de pacientes, cuja idade média, era pouco mais de 35 anos. A proporção de solteiros e de desquitados e divorciados era, na amostra, bem maior que na população geral.
