Psychotherapy with adults or children: expectations and social skills of psychology undergraduates

Resumo: | This study focused the relation among Psychology undergraduates’ self-evaluation of social skills, preference and expectations when working with children or adults clientele . 67 3rd year students, from four universities, have answered the Social Skills Inventory and a form concerning their expectations and preferences. According to the preference, the sample was divided in two groups: preference for adults and for children. The results showed: (a) more students indicated preference for adults, but the preference for children was more intense ; (b) the clientele choice was associated to the student’s positive aspects (competence, capacity, easiness) and to some characteristics they assigned to therapeutic process (attractiveness, difficulty, range of possible intervention), and not to clientele characteristics (importance, severity and amelioration probability); (c) preference for children group presented higher social skills scores in the Factor 2 (Self-assertion in the positive affect expression). Some practical implications of those results and suggestions for further researches are addressed. |

Some practical implications of those results and suggestions for further researches are addressed.Este estudo focalizou a relação entre a auto-avaliação de habilidades sociais de alunos de Psicologia, suas expectativas quanto ao atendimento terapêutico e sua preferência pelo atendimento de crianças ou adultos. Participaram 67 alunos de terceiro ano, de quatro universidades, que responderam ao Inventário de Habilidades Sociais e a um questionário de expectativas e opiniões sobre atendimento clínico. Com base no item preferência, a amostra foi dividida em dois grupos: preferência por adultos e preferência por crianças, para a análise dos demais dados. Os resultados mostraram: (a) maior proporção de preferência por atender adultos, mas maior intensidade da preferência por criança; (b) escolha da clientela associada a aspectos positivos do aluno (habilidade, capacidade, facilidade) e do processo terapêutico (atratividade, dificuldades e amplitude da intervenção possível), mas não a características da clientela (importância, gravidade e possibilidade de melhora); (c) escores de habilidades sociais significativamente maiores no grupo que preferiu crianças para o Fator 2: auto-afirmação na expressão de afeto positivo.
