Resumo: The purpose was to investigate the relations between the opinions of professionals with master and PhD degrees in Library and Information Science and university librarians that were in the VIII Seminário Nacional de Bibliotecas Universitárias (1994) regarding: desirable attitudes, skills and the necessary knowledge to Reference Service. Also, to investigate relations ofthese competencies with: function performed, conception of the main role of Reference, intellectual production, professional activities and job satisfaction. The results showed that the individuais work mainly in the Circulation andreaders' services; there is a possibility of disfunction of Reference. Job satisfaction ofprofessionals with master and PhD degrees who that work in Reference seemed compromised although they showed intellectual production related to this area. The results suggest that the relations founded, most of ali, are not following the theory's parameters of the area.

The results suggest that the relations founded, most of ali, are not following the theory's parameters of the area.O propósito foi investigar as relações entre opiniões de mestres e doutores da área de Biblioteconomia e Ciência da Informação e de bibliotecários universitários participantes do VIII Seminário Nacional de Bibliotecas Universitárias (1994) quanto a: atitudes desejáveis, habilidades e conhecimentos necessários ao Serviço de Referência. Também investigar relações dessas competências com: função desempenhada, concepção de principal função, produção intelectual, atividades profissionais e satisfação no trabalho. Os resultados mostraram que os sujeitos trabalham, principalmente, na Circulação e serviços aos usuários e existe possibilidade de disfunção do Serviço de Referência, em virtude da falta de diversidade de atividades desenvolvidas. A satisfação no trabalho dos mestres e doutores atuantes no Serviço de Referência pareceu comprometida, embora apresentassem produção intelectual relacionada ao trabalho.
