Mediation of information and competences in the reference sector of university libraries

It presents the results of research carried out with librarians who work in the reference sector of university libraries. The objective was to develop information skills in these professionals through a formative action, in order to provide the establishment of information mediator skills in their work activities. The methodological assumptions used were: qualitative approach, participant research method and non participant observation technique. The data were collected through interview scripts, prospecting forms and field diary, and treated by the content analysis technique with category establishment. The results demonstrate that the training given to the research participants contributed to the rethinking and reflection on the actions, knowledge, skills and attitudes that involve the activities of the referral service. It is worth mentioning that the exchange of experiences among librarians, facilitated by the training, as well as the exposure and discussion of theoretical knowledge of the area and of the reference sector, provided a better understanding of the issues inherent to this area, as well as the strengthening of the praxis and the performance of the librarian in order to deepen their relationship with the user in order to better serve him. It is concluded that it is imperative to have professionals with technical and behavioral skills that stimulate the user to return and to continue in the search and production of knowledge.
