Resumo: | This article seeks to analyze how images and speeches, produced by the illustrated satirical periodical El Látigo Inmortal (1889-1892), echoed some of the main political debates in Paraguay at the end of the 19th century. Following the methodological contributions of Luca (2008), on the use of the press as a source of historical research, and of Sandra Szir (2014; 2016) to discuss the importance of the image and text relationship in the 19th century illustrated press, we analyze the use of the feminine allegory of homeland in a selection of illustrations published by the journal. These illustrations formulated representations and projected their ideals onto the nation, presenting an ideological alignment with the Liberal Party, in constant opposition to the Colorado Party. The images of representation of the homeland, place the Colorado party as an oppressor, in opposition to the supposed liberal values defended by the Liberal party, registering the beginning of a history of bipartisan dispute that plays a leading role in the political scenario of Paraguay until today. |
