POLITICAL MATERNALISM IN THE FEMINIST MOBILIZATIONS OF THE PARAENSE DEPARTMENT FOR WOMEN’S PROGRESS (BELÉM/PA, 1931-1937)

Resumo: This article reflects on the feminism and the presence of political maternalism practiced by the feminists of the Paraense Department for Women's Progress, between the years 1931 and 1937, period of intense activities of the group in the city of Belém. In this strategy, some objectives were noted, such as the implementation of the rights claimed and the configuration of a positive image to the institution, with the permanence of certain feminine social roles. Thus, the feminists used maternity and its social importance as an intensifying factor to get what they wanted, whether in public celebrations, such as the Mother's Day tribute as a feminist celebration, or during periods of legislative reforms. From the newspapers and correspondence, it became possible to understand the feminist strategic actions, based on political maternalism.

Nessa estratégia, notam-se alguns objetivos, como a implementação dos direitos pleiteados e a configuração de uma imagem positiva à instituição, com a permanência de determinados papéis sociais femininos. Assim, as feministas utilizaram-se da maternidade e de sua importância social como fator intensificador para conseguir o que almejavam, seja em celebrações públicas, exemplo da homenagem ao Dia das Mães, como uma comemoração feminista, seja durante os períodos de reformas legislativas.
