Resumo: This study aimed to analyze the changes in living and working conditions of the remaining population affected by the construction of Itá hydroelectric power plant in southern Brazil as well as the relations between this process and social and environmental suffering. The qualitative study was based on participant research. Forty-three people affected by the construction of Itá hydroelectric power plant were interviewed. Data were submitted to Minayos’s thematic analysis. The results of the research showed that after the reservoir filling the researched population experienced the loss of the river, extinction of rural work, lack of access to potable water, energy, means of transportation, health, education, leisure and work, which lead to an intense suffering expressed through collective discouragement, sadness, loneliness and insecurity.

El estudio, de tipo cualitativo, se fundamentó en la investigación participativa. Se entrevistaron a 43 personas afectadas por la construcción de dicha represa, y los datos alcanzados fueron sometidos a un análisis temático. Los resultados demostraron que tras el llenado del embalse la población experimenta la pérdida del río, la extinción del trabajo rural, la falta de acceso a los servicios básicos, a la salud, a la educación y al ocio, generando un sufrimiento intenso que se expresa a través del desánimo colectivo, de la soledad y de la inseguridad.Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar as transformações nos modos de vida e de trabalho da população remanescente atingida pela construção da Hidrelétrica de Itá, no Sul do Brasil, e as interfaces desse processo com o sofrimento social e ambiental. O estudo, de cunho qualitativo, fundamentou-se na pesquisa participante. Foram entrevistadas 43 pessoas atingidas pela construção da barragem. Os dados obtidos foram submetidos à análise temática de Minayo.
