Teaching women to be good Christians in the Iberian area in 13th century: didactic function of female hagiographic models in Romance languages

Resumo: Medieval hagiography had an important didactic function. These stories were useful for the Catholic Church because they allowed to transmit values, models of behavior and complex ideas to the parishioners. In this research work we will explore three hagiographic works in verse written in different areas of the Iberian Peninsula during the thirteenth century, starring three saints who represent different models (martyrs, religious and penitents). Through this comparative study we have concluded that, beyond the topics associated with each model of holiness, the values transmitted as an example of “good Christian women” are repeated in all of them as a necessary condition for women to achieve eternal salvation: maintenance of virginity, chastity, penance and purge of sin. Thus, we can conclude that plenomedieval female hagiography had an important role in the transmission and settlement of the clearly misogynistic ideas of the clergy regarding the feminine.

Estos relatos fueron muy útiles para la Iglesia ya que permitían transmitir valores, modelos de conducta e ideas complejas a los feligreses. En este trabajo de investigación exploraremos tres obras hagiográficas en verso redactadas en distintas zonas de la Península Ibérica durante el siglo XIII, protagonizadas por tres santas que representan modelos diferentes (mártires, religiosas y penitentes). A través de este estudio comparativo hemos podido observar que, más allá de los tópicos asociados a cada modelo de santidad, los valores transmitidos como ejemplo de “buenas cristianas” se repiten en todos ellos como condición necesaria para que la mujer alcanzase la salvación eterna: mantenimiento de la virginidad, castidad, penitencia y purga del pecado.
