INTERNATIONAL DEBATES ABOUT MISSIONS AND THE BAPTIST INSERTION IN THE BACKLANDS OF BRAZIL

Resumo: The purpose of this article is to analyze the international debates on evangelization that culminated with the option of the National Missions Board of the Brazilian Baptist Convention to initiate the evangelization in the backlands of Brazil. Disagreements about alignment with other denominations, as well as about the priorities of places that should receive Baptist works, caused conflicts between North American and Brazilian missionaries in the first half of the 20th century. Letters, journals, minutes and a specialized bibliography were selected to reach the conclusions that the events narrated throughout the text contributed to the expansion of the denomination to the countryside in that period. It is expected that the article will contribute to discussions about Protestantism in the country, as well as about its insertion in the hinterland in the context in question. Los desacuerdos sobre la alineación con otras denominaciones, así como las prioridades de los lugares que debían recibir obras bautistas, provocaron conflictos entre los misioneros norteamericanos y brasileños en la primera mitad del siglo XX. Se seleccionaron cartas, periódicos, actas y bibliografía especializada para llegar a la conclusión de que los hechos narrados a lo largo del texto contribuyeron a la expansión de la denominación hacia el interior en ese período. Se espera que el artículo contribuya a las discusiones sobre el protestantismo en el país, así como su inserción en el hinterland en el contexto en cuestión. Palabras clave: protestantismo; Bautista; misiones; retaguardia.O objetivo deste artigo é a análise dos debates internacionais sobre evangelização que culminaram com a opção da Junta de Missões Nacionais da Convenção Batista Brasileira em iniciar a evangelização no sertão do Brasil. As discordâncias sobre alinhamento com outras denominações, bem como quanto às prioridades dos locais que deveriam receber trabalhos batistas causaram conflitos entre missionários norte-americanos e brasileiros na primeira metade do século XX. Selecionou-se cartas, periódicos, atas e uma bibliografia especializada para se chegar às conclusões de que os eventos narrados ao longo do texto contribuíram com a expansão da denominação para o interior naquele período.
