Despite consistent criticisms that have been made for decades, is still at use a way of “staging” History that refers to the mode of seeing proposed since classical antiquity with the “theaters of memory”. The appeal to the functions of evocation and celebration in these museums, employing such a way of articulating images and spaces in order to organize the remembrance of an order of the world, highlights the "theatricalization of power", through which hegemonic groups mobilize heritage as a political force. We intend here, taking as objects of analysis exhibition circuits of the National Historical Museum (MHN) in Rio de Janeiro and the City Museum of Governador Valadares/MG (MCGV), to capture such perspective "in the act", treating the situation itself as a "historical problem" to be investigated. This contrast allows us to emphasize how this theatricalization is perpetuated, as well as to reinforce a critical and methodologically consistent posture in the use of current historiographic approaches and theoretical achievements of social museology, in order to make History museums more effective in the tasks that their time imposes on them.
