Brazil in the latin american perspective: A coverage analysis of the integrationist TeleSUR Network

Resumo: The TeleSUR network emerged in 2005 as a counter-hegemonic communication alternative for Latin America. With the motto “Our north is the South”, the news channel has the perspective of integrating the countries of the region. Our objective is to understand how Brazil is presented in the news coverage of the pan-regional network. For this, we analyzed 462 news items published on the channel’s portal that mention the word “Brazil”. The collection was carried out between April and August 2020. Among the categories analyzed are periodization, specific subjects, geographic distribution and political actors mentioned. The result indicated that TeleSUR broadcasts mainly political issues about Brazil and that involve the government and the opposition. Indigenous peoples and social movements have also gained considerable space in the news.

Con el lema “Nuestro Norte es el Sur”, el canal de noticias tiene la perspectiva de integrar a los países de la región. Por tanto, nuestro objetivo es entender cómo se presenta Brasil en la cobertura de la red panregional. Para ello, analizamos 462 noticias publicadas en el portal del canal que mencionan la palabra “Brasil”. La recolección se realizó entre abril y agosto de 2020. Entre las categorías analizadas se encuentran la periodización, editoriales, temas específicos, distribución geográfica y actores políticos mencionados. El resultado indicó que TeleSUR afecta principalmente temas políticos sobre Brasil, que involucran al gobierno federal y la oposición. Los pueblos indígenas y los movimientos sociales también han ganado un espacio considerable en las noticias.A rede TeleSUR surgiu em 2005 como uma alternativa comunicacional contra-hegemônica para a América Latina. Com o lema “Nosso norte é o Sul”, o canal de notícias tem como perspectiva a integração dos países da região. Sendo assim, nosso objetivo é entender como o Brasil é apresentado na cobertura da rede pan-regional. Para isso, analisamos 462 notícias publicadas no portal do canal que mencionam a palavra “Brasil”. A coleta foi feita entre os meses de abril e agosto de 2020. Entre as categorias analisadas estão a periodização, editorias, assuntos específicos, distribuição geográfica e atores políticos mencionados. O resultado indicou que a TeleSUR repercute principalmente assuntos políticos sobre o Brasil, que envolvem o governo federal e a oposição.
