Mediatized listening experiences: How radio is placed in the current media ecosystem

Resumo: | This paper introduces the concept of “mediatized listening experiences”, i.e., the experiences and actions of individuals related to the enjoyment of sound content in different media, such as terrestrial radio, music streaming and podcasts. Radio is evaluated as one among several experiences available in the contemporary media ecosystem, which is impacted by the processes of deep mediatization that are transforming how people relate to media. Media consumption in web-based platforms, set up on the generation and management of user data, has become a referential interaction process. Thus, media now occupy a singular position on the construction of reality. When our attention moves towards the “experience”, new possibilities for understanding sound media arise. Therefore, it becomes essential to observe how radio industry is adapting. To illustrate the argument, the paper presents results from a recent research, conducted with stations from three different Brazilian regions. As conclusion, it was noted that, although relevant, the investments in listeners’ experience are yet limited. |

La radio es evaluada como una de las varias experiencias disponibles en el ecosistema de medios contemporáneo, que se ve impactado por los procesos de mediatización profunda que están transformando las relaciones de las personas con los medios. El consumo de medios en plataformas basadas en la web, configurado en la generación y gestión de datos de usuarios, se ha convertido en un proceso referencial de interacción. Así, los medios de comunicación ocupan ahora una posición singular en la construcción de la realidad. Cuando nuestra atención se desplaza hacia la “experiencia”, surgen nuevas posibilidades para entender los medios sonoros. Por lo tanto, se hace esencial observar cómo se está adaptando la industria de la radio. Para ilustrar el argumento, el trabajo presenta los resultados de una investigación reciente, realizada con estaciones de tres regiones brasileñas diferentes. Como conclusión, se observó que, aunque pertinentes, las inversiones en la experiencia de los oyentes eran todavía limitadas.Este artigo apresenta o conceito de “experiências midiatizadas de escuta”, isto é, as vivências e ações dos indivíduos relacionadas ao consumo de produções sonoras em diferentes meios, como o rádio hertziano, streaming musical e podcasts. A partir dessa descrição, o rádio é avaliado como uma entre várias experiências disponíveis no ecossistema midiático contemporâneo, impactado pelos processos de midiatização profunda que transformam as relações entre pessoas e mídias. O consumo midiático via sistemas na internet, amparado na geração e gestão de dados dos usuários, se tornou processo interacional de referência. Assim, as mídias ocupam espaço singular na construção da realidade. Ao focarmos a “experiência”, abrem-se novas possibilidades de compreensão da mídia sonora. Portanto, torna-se relevante observar como a indústria radiofônica está se adaptando ao novo contexto. Para isso, são apresentados resultados de uma pesquisa recente, conduzida em três diferentes regiões brasileiras.
