Social vulnerability and mental disorders: Scoping review

Mental health is an essential part of life, and can result in an increase of income inequality and social vulnerability. Therefore, the relationship between mental health / illness and social vulnerability is surrounded by reflections in order to better understand this phenomenon. This scoping review aimed at mapping scientific productions about the vulnerabilities of people with mental disorders considering their different social relationships. It was divided in 5 stages, with the search done in the following databases: MEDLINE via Pubmed; SCOPUS and Academic Search Premier, and search for the references of articles found, in order to answer the research question: “How does the vulnerability of people with mental disorders occur in their different social relationships?”. 211 articles were found, and after exclusion, 31 articles were included. The articles were organized into 3 (three) categories: 1- the vulnerability of people with mental disorders and health services; 2- vulnerability of people with mental disorders and social determinants; 3- vulnerability of people with mental disorders and violence / victimization. Thus, further studies on the subject are suggested as well as the reassessment of public policies aimed at people with mental disorders in order to assure their rights and their mental health.
