Resumo: This essay is about research and production of knowledge in Social Service from a Marxist perspective and its tradition. It also propose the a critical revisit of the Marxist legacy in the profession, emphasizing the pertinence and necessary concern for a productive dialogue between the Marxian production (as a social theory) and Social Service (as one of the professions witch deals with the multiple expressions of the social issues). Based on these considerations some important aspects are indicated for the production of knowledge in Social Service, its specificities and utility for the education and professional intervention of the social worker. Oferece, ainda, uma retomada crítica do legado marxista nessa profissão, ressaltando a pertinência e os cuidados necessários para uma interlocução profícua e propositiva entre a produção marxiana (como teoria social crítica) e o Serviço Social (como uma das profissões que atua com as múltiplas expressões da “questão social”). A partir dessas considerações, são indicados alguns aspectos importantes para a produção do conhecimento no Serviço Social, suas particularidades e sua utilidade para a formação e para a intervenção profissional do assistente social.
