Resumo: The article focus the extent to which Portuguese Social Service is characterized in the following aspects: the Social Assistant performance and the subsidies to have professional practice; the knowledge of the social policies to consolidate citizenship, access to social rights as resistance to the reality of exclusion and unevenness, and how the knowledge about the societal transformations echo in professional quotidian. This exploratory research was done with two hundred ninety two Portuguese social assistants, in Lisbon, Portugal, and it was financed by CAPES. The objective is to share another reality besides the Brazilian one. The results point to some proximity with the Portuguese conception, and at the same time contradictions if compared to Brazilian Social Service. Key words – Work process. Social policies. Citizenship.O artigo examina em que medida o Serviço Social Português se caracteriza nos seguintes aspectos: a atuação do Assistente Social e os subsídios para realizar a prática profissional; o conhecimento das políticas sociais para a consolidação da cidadania, acesso aos direitos sociais como resistência a realidade de exclusão e desigualdades e de que forma o conhecimento sobre as transformações societárias repercutem no cotidiano profissional. Essa pesquisa do tipo exploratório foi realizada duzentos e noventa e dois assistentes sociais portugueses, na cidade de Lisboa, financiada pela CAPES. Busca-se com isso, partilhar de outra realidade além da brasileira. Os resultados da pesquisa apontam para uma proximidade da concepção portuguesa, ao mesmo tempo indica diferenças e contradições se comparadas ao Serviço Social Brasileiro.
