Stress and its relation with Morphology in Portuguese

Resumo: This paper discusses BP primary stress and its relationship to morphology, based on the analysis proposed in Lee (2007) in the framework of Optimality Theory (Prince; Smolensky, 1993). It is argued that primary stress in Portuguese presents a mixed rhythm pattern (trochee and iamb), and that morphology is highly involved with the positioning of primary stress in this language. We will show that stress must have access to the lexical category and the internal structure of words, such as the stem in non-verbs and the thematic vowel in verbs.
