Acoustic characterization of the acquisition and/or development in voicing contrasts in plosives in the typical and atypical speech

The aim of this study was, through acoustic analysis, characterize and compare quantitatively the acquisition and/or development of voicing contrast in plosives segments in the typical and atypical speech. For this, the data of three groups of subjects were analyzed: children with atypical phonological development (study group - GCDFA), children with typical phonological development (GCDFT) and adults (GA) in three subsequent data collections. The relative duration of the segment, the posterior vowel, the voice onset time (VOT) and voicing (voicing bar) were studied. We observed that speech, although atypical, followed a regularity in relation to the acquisition of this contrast, mainly by the parameter of relative duration of voicing. By this parameter, it was found that the group of children in the last collection (3rd) obtained the durations of this parameter similar to those of the typical speech group, as was evidenced with inferential statistics. Still in the group, the durational difference presented from the 1st to the 3rd collection in the parameter of the mean of the relative duration of the segment that presented a decreasing behavior and by the mean relative duration of the posterior vowel that presented an inverse behavior, we evidenced the existence of covert contrasts that expressed the gradient and dynamic character of the linguistic representations that these children used.
