Resumo: This research investigates whether differences in F0 can be used as a clue to distinguish among different empty syntactic categories. Contexts with and without empty categories were tested. The contexts with empty categories involved ´trace´, ´pro´, and ´unclear´ when the empty category could be either a trace or a pro. Sentences with and without stress clash were also examined. The results show that regardless of whether or not there is a stress clash environment, ´trace´ was consistently differentiated from ´pro´ and ´unclear´. The results also show that ´unclear´ consistently patterns with ‘pro’ and that no distinction is found among sentences with traces less or more distant from their antecedent.

Foram criados contextos sem e com categoria vazia, e nestes casos tratou-se de ´vestígio´, ´pro´, e um contexto em que ´não é claro´ qual a categoria sintática, já que se conforma tanto com as características de vestígio quanto de pro. Foram testadas sentenças com encontro acentual e sem encontro acentual. Independentemente do contexto fonológico, os resultados foram consistentes na diferenciação entre pro e vestígio, e entre ´não é claro´ e vestígio.
