Vowel duration preceding plosive consonants in the Brazilian Portuguese dialect from Paraiba

Resumo: Considering studies that focus on segmental duration, empirical evidence suggests that vowels tend to be longer before voiced than before voiceless plosives in several languages, including English (LADEFOGED, 1982). Regarding this object of study in Brazil, studies have focused on L2 English (ZIMMER; ALVES, 2007, 2008, 2012; ALBUQUERQUE, 2010, 2012), L2 Portuguese (ALVES; BRISOLARA, 2020) and on interdialectal research (ESCUDERO et al., 2009). However, investigations on the linguistic system of Brazilian Portuguese, without taking into account the process of L2 development, are still scarce. Given this panorama, this study investigated vowel duration preceding stop consonants in the Brazilian Portuguese dialect of Paraiba. The durational values ​​allowed us to fit a mixed effects model to the data. The results suggest that voiced stops seem to favor significantly higher durational vowel values than their voiceless counterparts, in addition to allowing discussions on the challenges in L2 phonetic-phonological learning, in which such duration may play a decisive role in L2 intelligibility (ALVES; BRISOLARA, 2020).

Respecto a este objeto de estudio en Brasil, existen investigaciones que se enfocaron en el inglés como L2 (ZIMMER; ALVES, 2007, 2008, 2012; ALBUQUERQUE, 2010, 2012), en el portugués como L2 (ALVES; BRISOLARA, 2020) y en la investigación interdialectal (ESCUDERO et al., 2009). Sin embargo, son escasas las investigaciones sobre el sistema lingüístico del portugués brasileño, sin tener en cuenta el desarrollo de una L2. Ante este panorama, este estudio investigó la duración de las vocales que preceden a las consonantes oclusivas en la variedad dialectal del Portugués Brasileño de Paraíba. Los valores de duración fueron  considerados en un modelo de efectos mixtos a los datos. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran que las oclusivas sonoras parecen favorecer valores duracionales significativamente más altos, en detrimento de las oclusivas no sonoras, además de posibilitar reflexiones sobre los retos en el aprendizaje fonético-fonológico de una L2, en el que dicha duración puede jugar un rol decisivo para la inteligibilidad del habla en el idioma adicional (ALVES; BRISOLARA, 2020).Considerando-se os estudos que enfocam a duração segmental, destaca-se o fenômeno da produção de vogais precedentes a segmentos oclusivos vozeados e não vozeados, cujos valores, em várias línguas, tendem a ser superiores quando essas precedem uma consoante vozeada em detrimento de uma não vozeada, tal como ocorre no inglês (LADEFOGED, 1982). Acerca desse objeto de estudo no Brasil, encontram-se pesquisas que se debruçaram a respeito do inglês como L2 (ZIMMER; ALVES, 2007, 2008, 2012; ALBUQUERQUE, 2010, 2012), de português como L2 (ALVES; BRISOLARA, 2020) e pesquisas de cunho interdialetal (ESCUDERO et al., 2009). No entanto, investigações no sistema linguístico do português brasileiro, sem levar em conta o desenvolvimento de uma L2, são escassos. Diante desse panorama, este estudo investigou a duração de vogais precedentes a consoantes oclusivas na variedade dialetal da Paraíba. Os valores foram utilizados para ajustar um modelo de efeitos mistos aos dados.
