Contributions of thematic analysis to the treatment of newspapers in historiographic research

Resumo: This article presents a possibility of treating newspapers in historiographical research through thematic analysis of news content. Therefore, in an introductory way, this approach will be demonstrated in the study of the first news about the Russian Revolution published by the Brazilian workers’ press in 1917. The choice for the referred methodology in the treatment of the source was based on the search to understand how the journalistic production of the workers outlined the main ideas around the events concerning the Russian revolutionary process. In the thematic analysis of the journalistic text, the NVivo software was used due to its ability to provide diversified resources in the exercise of identifying themes. In order to demonstrate how the thematic correlations were elaborated, elements of the “Imprensa Operária” Project developed at NVivo are presented. The methodological proposal reported here intends to contribute with possible ways of innovation in the scope of historiographical research.

A escolha pela referida metodologia no tratamento da fonte baseou-se na busca por compreender como a produção jornalística dos trabalhadores delineou as principais ideias em torno dos acontecimentos referentes ao processo revolucionário russo. Na análise temática do texto jornalístico foi utilizado o software NVivo devido a sua capacidade de fornecer recursos diversificados no exercício da identificação dos temas. Para demonstrar como foram elaboradas as correlações temáticas são apresentados elementos do Projeto “Imprensa Operária” desenvolvido no NVivo.
