Inequality of educational outcomes amidst the expansion of the education system: A study considering the positional character of schooling

Resumo: The paper deals with the relationship between social origin and educational outcomes. The objective is to verify if the increasing schooling of the Brazilian population was able to weaken the relationship between class of origin and achieved education. We use relative measures of schooling, which reflect the distribution of education among the population and/or its value in the labor market. The empirical analysis is guided by the comparison of the results of statistical models that use absolute and relative measures of schooling. Such models are applied to data collected in 1982, 1996 and 2014, for individuals aged between 28 and 41 years, thus forming three distinct cohorts. The data come from the Pnads – IBGE, and are analyzed using linear (OLS) and non-linear (logit-ordinal) models. The results support the hypothesis that, by adopting relative measures of education, we arrive at less optimistic estimates about the capacity of educational expansion to reduce the effect of class origin on the level of schooling achieved.

El objetivo es verificar si la creciente escolaridad de la población brasileña logró debilitar la relación entre origen de clase y escolaridad alcanzada. Usamos medidas relativas de escolaridad, que reflejan la distribución de la educación entre la población y/o su valor en el mercado laboral. El análisis empírico se guía por la comparación de los resultados de modelos estadísticos que utilizan medidas absolutas y relativas de escolaridad. Dichos modelos se aplican a los datos recopilados en 1982, 1996 y 2014, para personas de entre 28 y 41 años, formando así tres cohortes distintas. Los datos provienen de las Pnads – IBGE, y son analizados utilizando modelos lineales (OLS) y no lineales (logit-ordinal). Los resultados apoyan la hipótesis de que, al adoptar medidas relativas de educación, llegamos a estimaciones menos optimistas sobre la capacidad de la expansión educativa para reducir el efecto del origen de clase sobre el nivel de escolaridad alcanzado.O artigo trata da relação entre origem social e resultados educacionais. A análise empírica se guia pela comparação dos resultados de modelos estatísticos que utilizam medidas absolutas e relativas de escolaridade. Tais modelos são aplicados a dados coletados em 1982, 1996 e 2014, para indivíduos com idade entre 28 e 41 anos, conformando assim três coortes distintas. Os dados são oriundos das Pnads – IBGE, e são analisados por meio de modelos lineares (OLS) e não lineares (logit-ordinais).
