Literacy in a religious context: A study with women rural workers in Bahia’s countryside

Resumo: This article presents the results of a qualitative research, developed through participant observation and semi structured interviews, that aimed to understand the ways of participation in the writing cultures of women rural workers who act as community leaders in the countryside of Bahia. It is our intent to analyze, specifically, the place occupied in this process by movements and rituals linked to the Catholic Church, such as the Basic Ecclesial Communities (CEBs), the Children Pastoral, catechesis and mass. The research has shown that women’s activities in the religious instances effectively increase their participation ways in the cultures of writing, marked in the context studied by interaction with other dimensions of language such as the oral, the visual and the gestural. We also find that the meanings attributed to reading and to writing are regulated by the community of readers in which they participate.

Buscamos analizar, específicamente, el lugar ocupado por movimientos y rituales vinculados a la Iglesia Católica, como las Comunidades Eclesiales de Base (CEBs), la Pastoral del Niño, la catequesis y la misa. La investigación mostró que la actuación en instancias religiosas efectivamente contribuye a que las mujeres amplíen sus modos de participar en las culturas del escrito, marcadas, en el contexto estudiado, por la interacción con otras dimensiones del lenguaje, como el oral, el visual y el gestual. Constatamos, además, que los sentidos atribuidos a lo leído y al escrito son regulados por la comunidad de lectores en la que participan.O presente artigo apresenta parte dos resultados de pesquisa qualitativa, desenvolvida por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas e de observação participante, que teve como objetivo compreender os modos de participação nas culturas do escrito de mulheres camponesas que atuam como lideranças comunitárias no interior da Bahia.
