Carnivalization: Contributions to the study of the aesthetics of the grotesque

Resumo: The present article points to the relevance of Bakhtin’s discussion about popular culture for the studies of the aesthetics of the grotesque. In this sense, we propose a discussion about Bakhtin’s understanding of the grotesque from his study of the popular festival and carnival dialogism, in order to understand the manifestations of grotesque realism in the field of carnivalization, punctuating essential elements, although little discussed today in his theory, especially the renovating capacity and the cosmovisionary expansion operated by the grotesque aesthetics in artistic manifestations. In the following, we seek to contrast it with the most recent studies on the grotesque, such as those of Rémi Astruc, seeking to demonstrate its timeliness and its potential contributions to this field of research.

En este sentido, proponemos una discusión sobre la comprensión de Bakhtin de lo grotesco a partir de su estudio de la fiesta popular y el dialogismo del carnaval, para comprender las manifestaciones del realismo grotesco en el campo de la carnavalización, puntuando elementos esenciales, aunque poco discutidos en la actualidad, sobre todo la capacidad renovadora y la expansión cosmovisionaria que opera la estética grotesca en las manifestaciones artísticas. A continuación, buscamos contrastarlo con los estudios más recientes sobre lo grotesco, como los de Rémi Astruc, buscando demostrar no solo su actualidad, sino también sus potenciales contribuciones a este campo de investigación.O presente artigo aponta para a atualidade da discussão de Bakhtin acerca da cultura popular para os estudos da estética do grotesco. Nesse sentido, propomos uma discussão acerca da compreensão de Bakhtin sobre o grotesco a partir de seu estudo da festa popular e do dialogismo carnavalesco, de modo a compreender as manifestações do realismo grotesco no campo da carnavalização, pontuando elementos essenciais, embora pouco discutidos ainda hoje em sua teoria, sobretudo a capacidade renovadora e o alargamento cosmovisionário operados pela estética grotesca nas manifestações artísticas.
