The foundation of literary periodicals in the third quarter of the nineteenth century: literature promotion or a political and educational agenda?

Resumo: | The article presents 8 first-editorials published in Portuguese literary periodicals (1855-1865). The research explores the aims of the publications established during a Portuguese literary controversy – Questão Coimbrã. By applying detailed text analysis, it addresses the following: a) editorial orientations; b) relationship fostered with the audience(s); c) target-audience(s)? Analysis points to strong educational concerns, mirroring the socio-historic context that placed great emphasis on the promotion of public education, when over 70% of the population was illiterate and in some cases to tightening the links with Brazil. |

Busca estudiar las publicaciones nacidas durante la polémica literaria portuguesa – la Cuestión Coímbra – y, aplicando detallada análisis de texto, examinar: a) la línea editorial de las publicaciones; b) la relación establecida con los lectores; c) ¿para quienes escribían? El análisis registra una preocupación didáctica, reflejo del contexto social e histórico de promoción de la instrucción pública, siendo que más de 70% de la población era analfabeta, y en algunos casos, para estrechar relaciones con Brasil.O artigo apresenta 8 textos-fundação de periódicos literários portugueses (1855-1865). Pretende estudar as publicações nascidas durante a polémica literária portuguesa – a Questão Coimbrã – e, aplicando análise de texto detalhada, analisar: a) a linha editorial das publicações; b) a relação estabelecida com os leitores; c) para que público(s) escreviam?
