Facing the berlinda: public uses of history and cultural heritage in Ceará’s hinterland

Resumo: The interventional experience in rural communities of Ceará, based on the work with the Participative Inventory methodology and the debate around categories such as memory, patrimony and identity, constitutes a privileged stand to reflect on the present uses of the past in the production of narratives by social movements. The first part of the article identifies and analyzes problems concerning the Middle Jaguaribe region in Ceará, focusing on rural communities in the municipality of Potiretama. Afterwards, scrutinizing the problems rising from the construction of the Figueiredo Dam, we question the possibilities surrounding the historian's craft, with the following axial inquiry: is it possible to move from an analytical posture to a propositional one in the historical/historiographic field? Considering the contribution of cultural heritage as a variant of appropriation of the past and its transmission, we demonstrate the possibilities of public uses of history and its forms of presentation which, in this case, have helped in the struggle and resistance processes of countryside populations, such as: the construction of a community museum, the creation of historical and archaeological trails, painting and audiovisual workshops, and others.

En la primera parte del artículo, identifica y analiza problemas relacionados con la región del Jaguaribe Medio de Ceará, enfocándose en las comunidades rurales del condado de Potiretama. Luego, examinando los problemas derivados de la construcción de la presa de Figueiredo, hacemos algunas preguntas en relación a las posibilidades de la profesión de historiador, planteando la pregunta: ¿Es posible avanzar en la posición analítica para el propósito o campo histórico / historiográfico? Considerando el aporte del patrimonio cultural como variante de apropiación del pasado y su transmisión, demostramos las posibilidades de usos públicos de la Historia y sus formas de presentación que, en este caso, nos ayudan en los procesos de lucha y resistencia de las poblaciones rurales, tales como: construcción de un museo comunitario, realización de senderos históricos y arqueológicos, talleres de pintura y audiovisuales, entre otros.A experiência interventiva em comunidades rurais cearenses, a partir do trabalho com a metodologia do Inventário Participativo e do debate em torno de categorias como memória, patrimônio e identidade, se constitui em mote privilegiado para refletirmos sobre os usos presentes do passado na produção de narrativas pelos movimentos sociais. A primeira parte do artigo identifica e analisa problemáticas concernentes à região do Médio Jaguaribe cearense, com foco nas comunidades rurais do município de Potiretama. Em seguida, escrutinando os problemas oriundos da construção da Barragem do Figueiredo, interpomos algumas questões em relação às possibilidades do ofício do historiador, possuindo como eixo a pergunta: é possível avançarmos da postura analítica para a propositiva no campo histórico/historiográfico?
