Cartas de Norteamerica: Life en Español and the Cultural Cold War (1953-1957)

Resumo: | In 1953, in the middle of the Cold War, Time-Life’s US-based Life magazine launched a Spanish-language version aimed at getting closer to the Latin American public, spreading the American way, Americanism and promote anti communism in the subcontinent. The period was notable by a series of organizations and treaties with the propose of regulating inter-American relations, under the hegemony of the United States. It is also characterized by the implementation of state agencies and programs designed to promote a cultural policy intended to achieve global hegemony, a strategy called “psychological warfare”. Life en Español magazine, directed by Henry Luce, integrated the wide network of collaborators who helped to realize this politicalcultural project of the United States. In this sense, from the theoretical perspective of Soft Power by Joseph Nye, the article discusses the relation of the publication in the Spanish language with the North American strategic objectives in the cultural field. |

El período estuvo marcado por una serie de tratados y organizaciones que pretendían regular las relaciones interamericanas, bajo la hegemonía de Estados Unidos. Se caracteriza también por la implementación de organismos y programas estatales destinados a promover una política cultural orientada a la conquista de la hegemonía mundial, estrategia denominada “guerra psicológica”. La revista Life en Español, dirigida por Henry Luce, integró la amplia red de colaboradores que ayudaron a efectivizar ese proyecto político-cultural de los Estados Unidos. En este sentido, a partir de la perspectiva teórica de Soft Power de Joseph Nye, el artículo discute la relación de la publicación en lengua española con los objetivos estratégicos norteamericanos en el campo cultural.Em 1953, em plena Guerra Fria, a revista norte-americana Life, do grupo Time-Life, lançou uma versão em língua espanhola com os objetivos de aproximar-se mais do público latino-americano, difundir o american way, combater o antiamericanismo e promover o anticomunismo no subcontinente. O período foi marcado por uma série de tratados e de organizações que visavam regular as relações interamericanas, sob a hegemonia dos Estados Unidos. Caracteriza-se também pela implementação de organismos e programas estatais destinados à promoção de uma política cultural voltada para conquista da hegemonia mundial, estratégia denominada de “guerra psicológica”. A revista Life en Español, dirigida por Henry Luce, integrou a ampla rede de colaboradores que ajudaram a efetivar esse projeto político-cultural dos Estados Unidos.
