Resumo: Starting from a set of divorce proceedings opened by Western African women, known as pretas (or negras) minas, in Rio de Janeiro in the 19th century, I intend, in this article, to discuss how the associations between color, social condition, ethnic identity and certain stereotypes and behaviors, such as notions of honor and honesty, were essential – sometimes even decisive – for the development of such actions. In this process, we will observe as judges, priests, lawyers, prosecutors and also slaves and freedmen observing – and sharing – certain codes and signs of identification of the African populations that lived in the city of Rio.

Nesse processo, observaremos como juízes, padres, advogados, procuradores e também cativos e forros percebiam – e compartilhavam – determinados códigos e signos de identificação das populações africanas que viviam na cidade do Rio.Editora da PUCRS - ediPUCRS2018-12-21info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://revistaseletronicas.pucrs.br/index.php/iberoamericana/article/view/3276410.15448/1980-864X.2018.3.32764Estudos Ibero-Americanos; Vol. 44 No. 3 (2018): Dossier: Colors, Classifications and Social Categories: Africans in the Iberian Empires, 16th to the 19th Centuries; 470-483Estudos Ibero-Americanos; Vol. 44 Núm. 3 (2018): Dossier: Colores, clasificaciones y categorías sociales: los africanos en los imperios ibéricos, del siglo XVI hasta el XIX; 470-483Estudos Ibero-Americanos; v. 44 n. 3 (2018): Dossiê: Cores, classificações e categorias sociais: os africanos nos impérios ibéricos, séculos XVI a XIX; 470-4831980-864X0101-406410.15448/1980-864X.2018.3reponame:Estudos Ibero-Americanosinstname:Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS)instacron:PUC_RSporhttps://revistaseletronicas.pucrs.br/index.php/iberoamericana/article/view/32764/17490Copyright (c) 2018 Juliana Barreto Fariashttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessFarias, Juliana Barreto2019-01-18T14:45:08Zoai:ojs.revistaseletronicas.pucrs.br:article/32764Revistahttps://revistaseletronicas.pucrs.br/index.php/iberoamericanaPRIhttps://revistaseletronicas.pucrs.br/index.php/iberoamericana/oaieditora.periodicos@pucrs.br||eia@pucrs.br1980-864X0101-4064opendoar:2019-01-18T14:45:08Estudos Ibero-Americanos - Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS)false
