Black Population in the Parahyba do Norte/Brazil: Racial Classification and Literacy in the XIXth Century

Resumo: The polysemy of racial classifications for black population of Parahyba do Norte/Brazil is discussed. From the research on primary sources such as the press and documents of the provincial administration, and with the theoretical contribution of social history, history of education and history of slavery are exposed terms related to color, qualities and conditions, in order to discuss the different possibilities of being black in the nineteenth century. In this way, the limits between slavery and freedom are discussed, and how the possibility of fluidity between being a slave and being free person affected the identification of the subjects. It is concluded that the imprecision that surrounded black population interfered in their correlation with instruction, and how the contact with the literate universe could interfere in the classifications of the individuals.

Desde de la investigación en fuentes primarias como periódicos y documentos de la administración provincial, y con el aporte teórico de la historia social, historia de la educación e historia de la esclavitud se exponen palabras ligados a colores, cualidades y condiciones, a fin de investigar las diferentes posibilidades de ser negro en el siglo XIX. Con eso, se discuten los límites entre esclavitud y libertad, y cómo la posibilidad de fluidez entre ser esclavo y ser libre afectaría la identificación de los sujetos. Se concluye que la imprecisión que podía rodear sujetos negros interfería en la relación de esa población con la instrucción, y cómo el contacto con el universo letrado interfería en las clasificaciones de los individuos.Discute-se a polissemia de classificações possíveis para a população negra da Província da Parahyba do Norte. A partir da pesquisa em fontes primárias como imprensa e documentos da administração provincial, e com o aporte teórico da história social, história da educação e história da escravidão são expostos termos ligados a cores, qualidades e condições, a fim de discutir as diferentes possibilidades de ser negro no século XIX. Com isso, discutem-se os limites entre escravidão e liberdade, e como a possibilidade de fluidez entre ser escravo e ser livre afetaria a identificação dos sujeitos.
