Resumo: This article analyzes the site and role of festival in Hispano-American society. In Iberia, these are related to the blending of the sacred and the profane in the popular culture tradition: in the New World, to the instruments of catechesis and indoctrination.

Al igual que en la metrópoli, las partes del mundo colonial fundieron lo sagrado y lo profano, y exaltaron los poderes del Estado y de la Iglesia. En el Nuevo Mundo, sin embargo, estas, junto con el teatro religioso, tenían un papel importante a cumplir como herramienta de adoctrinamiento y evangelización de los pueblos indígenas.O presente artigo analisa o lugar e o papel da festa na Hispano-América. Assim como na metrópole, as festas do mundo colonial mesclaram sagrado e profano e exaltaram os poderes do Estado e da Igreja.
