History and politics, or the art of making choices

Resumo: The present article proposes the reflection not only on the office of the historian, but of his activity as a political agent. Starting from a brief rescue of the etymology of the words history and politics, in this research we discuss the role played in the writing of history and the force of the political decisions of those who produce it. The activity of the historian occurs from the delimitation of several prisms, such as the choice of objects, methodologies and theoretical contributions, which contributes to the identification of the position of the professional, in the same way as the political character of the historian’s activity. This paper tries to present some answers to questions about the activity of the historian as a political gesture and the writing of historiographical texts, as well as the impossibility of being considered exempt or neutral.

A partir de un breve rescate de la etimología de las palabras historia y política, se discute, en esta investigación, el papel ejercido sobre la escritura de la historia y la fuerza de las decisiones políticas de quien la produce. La actividad del historiador ocurre a partir de la delimitación de diversos prismas, como la elección de objetos, de metodologías y aportes teóricos, lo que contribuye en la identificación del posicionamiento del profesional, del mismo modo como el carácter político de la actividad del historiador. Este trabajo busca presentar algunas respuestas para cuestiones acerca de la actividad del historiador como un gesto político y la escritura de textos historiográficos, así como la imposibilidad de los mismos ser considerados exentos o neutros.O presente artigo propõe a reflexão não apenas sobre o ofício do historiador, mas de sua atividade enquanto agente político. Partindo de um breve resgate da etimologia das palavras história e política, discute-se, nesta pesquisa, o papel exercido sobre a escrita da história e a força das decisões políticas de quem a produz. A atividade do historiador ocorre a partir da delimitação de diversos prismas, como a escolha de objetos, de metodologias e de aportes teóricos, o que contribui na identificação do posicionamento do profissional, do mesmo modo como o caráter político da atividade do historiador.
