Elderly knowledge about sexuality in the aging process

Resumo: | Objective: to describe the elderly’s conceptions about sexuality in the aging process.Methods: this is an exploratory study with a qualitative approach, carried out from February to June 2019, in the city of Iguatu/CE with two groups of elderly people.Results: the qualitative findings were divided into three categories: Knowledge of the elderly about sexuality, Aspects that interfere with sexuality during old age, and Preventive methods and Sexually Transmitted Infections in aging. The knowledge of the elderly is involved with their experiences and life and health conditions. The health-disease process and behaviors associated with social life cut across conceptions of sexuality in the aging process.Conclusion: the study evidenced the conception of the elderly, as well as their beliefs and values regarding health and sexuality. In this way, it was possible to see that the public understands the theme with complexity involving emotions and behaviors, extended beyond the sexual act. |

El conocimiento de las personas mayores involucra sus vivencias y condiciones de vida y salud. El proceso salud-enfermedad y los comportamientos asociados con la vida social atraviesan las concepciones de la sexualidad en el proceso de envejecimiento.Conclusión: el estudio evidenció la concepción de las personas mayores, así como sus creencias y valores sobre la salud y la sexualidad. De esta forma, se pudo constatar que el público comprende el tema con una complejidad que involucra emociones y comportamientos, extendidos más allá del acto sexual.Objetivo: descrever as concepções dos idosos sobre a sexualidade no processo de envelhecimento.Métodos: trata-se de um estudo exploratório com abordagem qualitativa, realizado no período de fevereiro a junho de 2019, no município de Iguatu, CE, com dois grupos de idosos.Resultados: os achados qualitativos foram divididos em três categorias: Conhecimento dos idosos sobre a sexualidade; Aspectos que interferem na sexualidade durante a velhice; e Métodos preventivos e Infecções Sexualmente Transmissíveis no envelhecimento. O conhecimento dos idosos se implica com suas experiências e as condições de vida e saúde. O processo saúde-doença e os comportamentos associados à vida social atravessam as concepções sobre sexualidade no processo de envelhecimento.Conclusão: o estudo evidenciou a concepção dos idosos, assim como suas crenças e valores no que se refere à saúde e à sexualidade.
