Resumo: Aims: To evaluate the occurrence of congenital rubella syndrome in women that received rubella vaccine and did not know being pregnant, or became pregnant up to 30 days after vaccination. Methods: Data from 171 pregnant women that were susceptible at the time of vaccination were collected. Newborn infants’ blood was prospectively collected at the moment of delivery, for examination. All babies with positive rubella-specific IgM were evaluated according a protocol for detection of sequelae of the congenital rubella syndrome. Samples from nasopharyngeal secretions were collected for viral identification. Results: Serological samples were taken from 152 babies of susceptible mothers. A total of 10 babies (6.3%) were infected by the vaccine virus during pregnancy and presented rubella-specific IgM antibodies. None of them presented congenital malformations related to rubella. Conclusions: The study allows to amplify the safety of the rubella vaccine in pregnant women. KEY WORDS: RUBELLA; RUBELLA SYNDROME, CONGENITAL; RUBELLA VACCINE/adverse effects; PREGNANCY; TERATOGENIC DANGERS.
