Resumo: In relation to Buddhism, Max Weber explains that, despite not having a definite importance in India today, its great success in ancient India, rooted in its development - now much expanded - in China, Tibet, Korea, Japan etc., qualifies it as a universal religion: it is one of the greatest missionary religions of the earth. According to Weber, Buddhism does not bind itself to a mere speculative knowledge, but to a state of peace and tranquility that is achieved by renouncing the world by means of self-realization; what is sought is not release towards eternal life, but a tranquility for death.

According to Weber, Buddhism does not bind itself to a mere speculative knowledge, but to a state of peace and tranquility that is achieved by renouncing the world by means of self-realization; what is sought is not release towards eternal life, but a tranquility for death. Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo2014-06-30info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://revistas.pucsp.br/index.php/rever/article/view/20265REVER: Journal for the Study of Religion; Vol. 14 No. 1 (2014): Religiões Indianas; 11-35REVER: Revista de Estudos da Religião; v. 14 n. 1 (2014): Religiões Indianas; 11-351677-1222reponame:Rever (São Paulo.
