A Buddha for the Mediterranean: The Creating of the Image of the Standing Buddha According to a Roman Model

Resumo: The aim of this article is to examine the origins of the Standing-Buddha-image, resulting from an intercultural dialogue between the Roman Empire and Kushan India, between the first and the third century BC. It is argued that this representation of traditional Buddhist iconography was inspired by the model of Augustus Labican, thus bridging the Mediterranean’s cultures and the Buddhist religion.
