Resumo: Uneasiness and dissatisfaction with one’s body may reflect on the physical and mental health of young people. This study aimed to understand the repercussions of idealized standards of beauty in adolescent’s mental health. A total of 128 adolescents, between 14 and 19 years old, from public and private schools, took part of three questionnaires and the data was quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed. Physical, relational and behavioral traits were listed by participants as indicators of beauty. The results showed that physical appearance is important (66%) and feelings, both ‘negative’ (46%) and ‘positive’ (78%) are incited by it. Also showing that 80% of the sample showed longings and attempts to change it. Violence and exclusion (42%) resulting from appearance, as well as, depression (31%), anxiety (22%) and body image distortions (19%) symptoms were shown. The statistic analyses traced correlations amongst variables indicating significant relations between them. The most frequent associations were between gender and certain symptoms that indicate mental health impairment. The conclusion is that beauty standards of adolescents can influence multiple daily experiences, enabling repercussions on their physical and mental health.
